DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR BARRET GRANTS SET FOR AUG. 10

By Shirley Downing

The deadline to apply for a grant from about $18 million still available from the Paul W. Barret Jr. Charitable Trust is Aug. 10.

Trust administrators said 18 organizations have been chosen in recent months to share $57.6 million in grants. The trust expects to award all funds within two years.

"The trustees have set the deadline in recognition that most of the trust's assests have already been granted and a large number of proposals have been received for the remaining assets," said Gid Smith, president of the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis, in a prepared statement. The Community Foundation administers the trust.

Barrett was a Shelby County banker who died in 1999. He left assests valued at about $75 million. Money from their sale funded the trust.

The trust is disbursing the grants to nonprofit educational, church or church-related charities, and hospitals, civic and government affiliated groups engaged in charitable work.

Proposals from 172 organizations seeking $381 million have been submitted.

Rhodes College received $35 million and was the single largest recipient. Mid-South School of Banking received the next largest sum, $8 million. Youth Villages received $2.5 million.

Ten organizations each received $1 million: Mid-South Chapter of the American red Cross, Ronald McDonald House, Church Health Center, Memphis Union Mission, Neighborhood Christian Centers, Rosemark Presbyterian Church, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, The Salvation Army, Tipton-Rosemark Academy, and the University of Memphis.

Recipients of $500,000 grants are Barret's Chapel Elementary School, Bolton High School, Collierville Alzheimer's Services and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The Pleasant Union (Mudville) Cemetery received $100,000.

Applications are available from the Community Foundation.
